Paul Robinson has claimed that Tottenham should look to sign Leeds United defender Ben White as a potential replacement for the likes of Toby Alderwiereld and Jan Vertonghen.

White joined Leeds on a season-long loan from Spurs' Premier League rivals Brighton during the summer transfer window, and has made a huge impact at Elland Road.

A string of impressive performances have seen White establish himself as an ever-present for Leeds in the league this season, helping them to second in the current Championship standings.

That is something that appears to have caught the attention of Robinson, who when speaking to Football Insider about potential transfer targets for new Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, said: “Depending on Vertonghen and Alderweireld, I wouldn’t mind seeing him strengthen at centre-back, somebody like Ben White at Leeds, somebody of that quality would be a great addition."

Indeed, it seems Robinson - who represented both Spurs and Leeds during his career - believes Tottenham could already be taking a look at the 22-year-old, with the former goalkeeper adding: “I don’t doubt for one minute the Spurs scouts are looking at him because he stereotypically the type of player that Spurs want to sign – a young, talented player.

“Whether Mourinho wants that or whether he wants some ready-made, world-class star that we know, I think he needs to strengthen on the back four.”

It has previously been reported that two of Tottenham's fellow Premier League sides - Liverpool and Manchester United - are also monitoring White's progress ahead of potential moves for the centre back.

If Spurs were to secure his signing, White would not be the first player with a Leeds connection to make the move Tottenham recently.

In the summer, it was announced that the Premier League side had secured the signing of winger Jack Clarke from Leeds, before loaning him back to him this season, a move which has seen the 19-year-old make just one league appearance for the Elland Road club this season.

The Verdict

I could certainly understand Tottenham taking an interest here.

White has been absolutely outstanding for Leeds this season, with the fact that this is his spell at Championship level suggesting that he is more than capable of handling any step-up in ability he is required to make.

Indeed, with the centre back still only 22-years-old, it does seem as though he is someone who could fill the boots of the likes of Alderweireld and Vertonghen for many years to come were he to move to Spurs.

Add to that the fact that it looks as though Tottenham would be beating two significant rivals in the shape of Liverpool and Manchester United if they do win the race for his signature, and it seems as though this would be a very smart move indeed for Mourinho and co.
