Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed has sent a message to former teammate James Maddison after the Leicester City midfielder made his England debut on Thursday night.

Maddison was introduced as a second-half substitute in the 7-0 thrashing of Montenegro at Wembley Stadium and, having played together at Norwich during the 2017/18 campaign, Reed was quick to offer his thoughts.

Writing on his personal Instagram story alongside a picture of Maddision, Reed wrote: "There he is. Congrats my boy."

Both players were ever present during Daniel Farke's first season at Carrow Road with Reed racking up 39 Championship appearances as well as one goal and four assists.

However, it was a huge season for Maddison who earned himself a Premier League move off the back of the campaign after netting 14 times and providing a further eight assists.

He has gone from strength to strength since moving to Leicester as well, so far notching 13 goals and nine assists, whilst Reed remains out on loan from Southampton.

During his stint with Fulham he has managed 12 appearances but is yet to find the back of net or lay on a goal for a teammate.

Heading into the international break, however, Fulham sit just outside the Championship play-off places, with a 1-0 win away to Birmingham City keeping them firmly in touch with the other promotion chasers.

The verdict

It was an England debut that was so far overdue for Maddison.

And whilst Reed will undoubtedly have been delighted for his former teammate, he will surely have been reminded that his own career is perhaps not progressing on the same trajectory that he may have liked.

Fulham will be hoping that it will act as inspiration for the rest of the season, however.
