Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards has described Leeds United winger Helder Costa as the best player he’s ever played with.

Edwards was at the club when Wolves signed Costa from Benfica for a club-record fee of £13 million in January 2017.

The Portuguese forward joined Leeds this summer on a season-long loan that is set to become permanent next summer.

The 25-year-old is yet to start in the Championship for the Whites but has made an impact already, scoring once and providing three assists in nine total appearances this season, and if Edwards is to be believed that will only continue.

Is this the WORST Leeds United XI from the last 15 years? We'll let YOU decide....

Speaking to The Athletic, Edwards described the Leeds man as: “The best player I’ve played with, even in terms of the Premier League”.

He added: “He had everything in his game. I was an attacking midfielder and he was a dream to have alongside you.

“Quite honestly, whenever I got the ball I was looking for him. I scored 10 goals that season and he must have set up six or seven of them.

“When he got out wide, he was so consistent with the ball. He used to face a defender up, shape to cut inside but go past him and put in a cross which was either a nightmare to clear or simple to tap in. He never smashed the ball or tried too hard to pick out one player.”

Costa may get his first league start of the season on Saturday when Derby County visit Elland Road.

The Verdict

These comments should excite Leeds fans as it shows what the 25-year-old could bring when he gets a consistent run in the side.

Costa has a fantastic record in the Championship, scoring 15 goals and providing 15 assists, and looks like he could be an excellent addition to the side once he gets going.

Jack Harrison and Pablo Hernandez have been Marcelo Bielsa’s starting wingers so far this season but you imagine it will only be a matter of time before Costa cements his place in the first team.
