As per Sky Sports, former Leeds United midfielder David Prutton has offered up his predictions for the opening round of Championship fixtures, as the long-awaited big Football League kick off finally takes place this weekend.
Prutton predicts his former side to secure a victory when they visit newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, calling a 2-1 victory in Thomas Christiansen’s opening league match, with last season’s top scorer Chris Wood to find the back of the net.
Recently-relegated Sunderland open their second tier season by hosting Gary Rowett’s Derby County tonight, and Prutton feels that the Rams will prove to be too strong for the Black Cats, predicting another 2-1 away victory, with another striker named Chris to score – this time, Derby’s Chris Martin to find the back of the net, in his first league game back after last season’s loan spell with Fulham.
In Saturday’s crunch clash between free-spending Wolverhampton Wanderers and Middlesbrough, Prutton sees another away win on the cards, and plenty of goals, backing Boro to see off Nuno Santo’s men, securing a 3-2 victory at Molineux.
Nobody wants to lose their opening game of the season, and Prutton predicts draws between Fulham and Norwich City, Ipswich Town and Birmingham City, as well as between newly-promoted Sheffield United and Brentford.
Aston Villa and last season’s beaten play-off finalists Reading are among the teams that many expect to be challenging again this season, and Prutton predicts one-goal wins for both; a 2-1 victory for the Villains at home to recently-relegated Hull City and a narrow 1-0 away victory for the Royals against Ian Holloway’s QPR side.
Prutton’s predictions predicts that many people’s tips to have successful seasons will get off to a good start.
Personally, I feel Fulham might have a little bit too much for Norwich, but much depends on how fit talismanic captain Tom Cairney is for the Whites – and of course the Canaries will be fired up not to lose new manager Daniel Farke’s first match in charge.
If he is right about the scoreline in the Wolves v Middlesbrough match – to my mind, the pick of the weekend’s matches – then the second tier season will get off to an absolute flyer!
