Chris Kirkland believes that Garry Monk still faces a battle to keep his job whilst the threat of relegation hangs over Sheffield Wednesday.

A run of four successive defeats had heaped the pressure on the Owls chief going into the midweek clash with Bournemouth but his side pulled off a shock and beat the Cherries at Hillsborough.

Further good news was to follow, as it was revealed that Wednesday's 12-point deduction was halved to six with immediate effect, leaving the Owls just three points from safety going into today's game with Millwall.

Despite that, Kirkland, who made 91 appearances for the Yorkshire club, told FootballFanCast that he wouldn't be surprised if Monk did lose his job as the season progresses.

"Garry, obviously with the deduction, it’s going to be tough. You’re always playing catch up. But yeah I can see it [getting sacked]. I think if he loses a few more games the board will start to panic because they’ve got to stay up.

"Sheffield Wednesday going into League One, you know, with all the money troubles and everything could finish the club."

Victory today would give the club back-to-back home league wins for the first time since December 2019.

The verdict

These are slightly surprising comments by Kirkland as it has been a very good few days for Wednesday with the win and the points deduction news.

Plus, the comments from Dejphon Chansiri in the weeks suggested he would be supporting the manager and he still feels they can come good.

Having said that, as he rightly points out, if it does appear as though the club will go down, action will be taken. So, it's down to Monk to keep picking up results and he will be desperate for three points this afternoon.
