Former Sheffield Wednesday full back Michael Gray has called on the club to keep patience with manager Carlos Carvalhal, who has guided the Yorkshire club into the play-offs in the last two seasons, according to the Express.

The Owls looked as if they'd got their season back on track after a slow start when they beat local rivals Leeds United 3-0 last time out but lost 2-1 against strugglers Bolton Wanderers on Saturday to grant the Lancashire club their first win of the season and their first league win since their promotion back to the second tier.

Despite faltering again, Gray called for patience, largely based on what the Portuguese manager has done already during his time in charge.

Gray said: “You only get a few opportunities to get into the Premier League. They’ve had two sniffs at it, they fell short at the final hurdle.

“I still think you’ve got to be patient with him. A couple more wins gets them back up to where they should be and if they can get back into the play-offs, who knows? They’ve got every chance.”

For his part, Carvalhal said: "We had chances, they had chances and this was an open game. This was because Bolton scored early in the game and we were fighting to come back.

“Sam was very unlucky with the own goal and these things happen in football. But we scored the goal, we created chances.”

The Verdict:

Wednesday sit 12th in the Championship and while that is not good enough, it is worth remembering that they are not the only fancied side in the division who are struggling to live up to their pre-season expectations at present.

Carvalhal has worked wonders in his time at the helm and I can't help but agree with Gray that he is the best man for the job at this moment in time.

If Gary Hooper keeps scoring, the Owls have every chance of kickstarting their season and getting into the play-offs for the third season in a row.
