Former QPR man could be set for Championship return

29-year old Moroccan winger Adel Taarabt, once of Queens Park Rangers, could be set for a return to the Championship according to reports.

Portuguese outlet Record, via Sports Witness, have reported that the tricky winger is on the radar of a couple of Championship clubs after falling out of favour with Benfica this season.

He’s currently contracted at Estádio da Luz until 2020, but has failed to impress himself on the squad this season and is without an appearance in either the first team or the reserve side. That has reportedly put Championship clubs on alert, although the report doesn’t specify which ones are looking at Taarabt.

Taarabt scored 34 times in 164 outings for the Hoops, playing plenty of Premier League football into the bargain. He spent some time on loan at Fulham and AC Milan, but upon completion of his deal at Loftus Road he switched to Benfica.

He’s struggled there and recently enjoyed time on loan with Genoa in Serie A, with any Championship move likely to be a loan deal too.

The Verdict

He was a fancy-dan, a tricky player who went missing whenever the going got tough. Sure, he’s a talent, but if he was that good he’d get a game at Benfica, wouldn’t he?

He can’t even get in their B Team now. This wouldn’t be a great move for a top side, although  could see West Brom signing him. It’s a hunch I have.
