Shay Given has hit out at critics of Wolverhampton Wanderers' big spending.

Given, speaking exclusively to 888sport, believes that Wolves are well within their rights to spend the money that they did to win promotion.

The former Premier League goalkeeper asserts that there is nothing wrong with spending money to bring in players.

Given said: “They can be as big as the backers want them to be. I’m not speaking rocket science here and it’s the same at Newcastle and other clubs.

"I don’t agree with people having a go at Wolves and saying they’ve done anything wrong. What have they done wrong? They’ve just bought players and spent a lot of money and I don’t see a lot wrong with that."

Wolves signed seven first-team players last summer, including spending a Championship record fee of £15.8m for midfield sensation Ruben Neves.

This inevitably drew criticism from others - some of whom have claimed that Nuno Espirito Santo's side gained an unfair advantage due to their backing.

Looking ahead to the Premier League, Given believes Wolves can keep their upwards momentum going into next season if their owners provide Nuno with another sizeable war-chest.

He added: "They have won the league and people want to have a go at them for how they run their business but with the backers they have they can go big again next year.”
