The 33-year-old striker is in talks with Jackett over a potential free transfer to the Sky Bet Championship side after leaving Palace in the summer, where he made just four substitute appearances in the second half of last season.

He saw his 14 year stay at St James’ Park come to an end in 2014, in which time he scored 79 goals in 397 games for the Magpies, which is further testament to the striker’s loyalty at the North-East club.

However, he is now looking for a new venture to see out the tail end of his career, and Wolves may be his next move.

The forward was also reportedly in talks with Huddersfield Town over a move to the Championship, but Molineux is now his likely destination after being persuaded by Jackett to train with the Wolves’ squad.

Speaking about the move, Jacket said: ‘Shola will be training with us, and coming down to talk, but it’s early in the whole situation.’

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell will be disappointed that the talented forward has slipped from his grasp, but as Wolves’ are pushing for a top-six finish at the end of the season, Ameobi may have favoured the chance for more Championship success.

Wolves boss Jackett faces a striker shortage at Molineux, with only Adam Le Fondre and Benik Afobe fit and available for selection, and it looks likely that the Championship club will miss out on Manchester United forward James Wilson, who will remain at Old Trafford despite interest from clubs in the second tier.

Therefore, a move for Ameobi would no doubt help bolster their attacking options.

He has Championship experience after he helped Newcastle win the league back in 2010, and that experience will surely be an asset that Jackett is keen to use to his advantage as Wolves’ look to improve upon their inconsistent start to the season.

Wolves fans… what do you make of the news? How good of a signing would Ameobi be for your club? Would he be a good addition? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
