Phil Brown blasted Glenn Loovens on television as he analysed Sheffield Wednesday's defeat to Derby County, The Express reports.

Appearing on Football on 5: The Championship, Southend United manager Phil Brown pinned the blame for Sheffield Wednesday's loss on Loovens, who was shown a straight red card in the very early stages of the match.

The 34-year-old had been sidelined for two months with a hip injury and made his comeback to the starting line-up against Derby County on Saturday.

However, just four minutes into the game, the Dutchman hauled Matej Vydra to the ground inside the area which resulted in Sheffield Wednesday conceding a penalty and Loovens was also given his marching orders.

Already a goal down and down to ten men, Sheffield Wednesday failed to overcome the mountainous task left by Loovens' error of judgement and they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Pride Park.

On Football on 5: The Championship (quotes via The Express), former Hull City manager Phil Brown said:

“It’s such a poor decision, isn’t it?

“For a centre half of his capabilities and experience to do that, he knows if he takes any part of the player he’s going to go down and it’s a red card and you’re only four minutes into the game, penalty, game effectively over you could say.”

The Verdict

Carlos Carvalhal had placed his faith in Loovens after a lengthy lay-off and a moment of madness early on in the game appears to have cost his side three points.

To play with ten men for 85 minutes and already be a goal down is tough but Carvalhal will be encouraged that his side offered some resilience and threatened.

The Loovens incident was definitely a penalty and a red card - it is hard to comprehend just what he was thinking.
