Former Manchester United, Sunderland and West Ham manager David Moyes has assessed West Bromwich Albion’s chances of winning promotion this season.

The Baggies have plenty of work to do if they are to get back into the top two, but Moyes believes that they will have a very good chance in the play-offs anyway.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (via the Birmingham Mail), he said: “Most people would expect Leeds, Norwich or Sheffield United to go up automatically.

“West Brom are in a good position, but it’s when you get into the play-offs, having experience maybe of the manager who can help them go up.

“What West Brom have certainly got is the experience of the team.”

The West Midland’s club made the controversial decision to sack manager Darren Moore three weeks ago after a heavy loss to Leeds and a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

Since them, caretaker boss Jimmy Shan has picked up two straight wins, beating Swansea City and Brentford to steer them back in the right direction.

But they still sit a sizeable seven points behind Chris Wilder’s second-placed Blades with just eight matches left of the season.

The verdict

I think this is a more than reasonable assessment from Moyes.

West Brom certainly have a lot of experience within the squad with the likes of Chris Brunt, James Morrison, Gareth Barry and Craig Dawson to call on.

But how Shan will handle a play-off campaign, as it is likely be, will be interesting to see.
