Jos Luhukay has won just four of his sixteen matches in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, with rumblings of discontent likely to be heard around the blue half of Sheffield after last night's defeat to QPR.

The former Stuttgart manager has found life in the English second tier tough, having lost seven of his last eleven matches. Wednesday have been hit by injuries to key players such as Gary Hooper and a loss of form from Jordan Rhodes, an expensive summer purchase.

That hasn't stopped speculation surrounding the manager's future and Owls legend Carlton Palmer has been having his say on who he'd like to see take over at Hillsborough, should Luhukay pay the ultimate price for his unconvincing start.

His first choice would be former team mate Nigel Pearson, currently managing in Belgium. Pearson played a part in Leicester City's rise to Premier League champions, bringing them from the Championship to the Premier League in 2015. He spent seven years at Hillsborough as a player, from 1987 to 1994.

Palmer also mentioned Mick McCarthy, the Barnsley-born manager who left Ipswich last night ahead of schedule. McCarthy, a no-nonsense Yorkshireman, would see a return to more traditional values at Hillsborough should that be the way the owners want to take the club.

Palmer made over 200 appearances for the Owls before joining Leeds in 1994 and amassed 18 England caps, as well as an international goal against San Marino.

The Verdict

I sometimes struggle to take the opinions of Palmer seriously because I still see the gangling midfielder who, in the words of Ron "can trap a ball further than I can kick it." It is of course grossly unfair to judge his current opinion on his ability.

He's not far off in his choices either, I think Wednesday need a return to the traditional, an English manager who will make them hard to beat first and foremost. Those first fifteen minutes last night highlighted everything wrong with the current side and I'm not sure Luhukay has the answers.
