Lewis McGugan has backed former club Nottingham Forest to finally return to the Premier League this season despite their recent struggles.
A run of one win in six games has seen the Reds lose significant ground in the race for automatic promotion and a top two finish now seems unlikely.
Nevertheless, Sabri Lamouchi’s men hold a six-point lead over seventh place as they hope to finish in the play-offs, so they are still in the hunt to go up.
And, speaking to TalkSPORT, McGugan made it clear he think that this could be Forest’s year and explained what makes the Reds stand out from the rest.
“I think they are more than capable [of earning promotion]. When the manager came in, a lot of people hadn’t heard of him and there was a lot of negative responses, but he’s answered them and I think he’s got the team and squad playing fantastically.
“The biggest thing that they are is pretty consistent. They have a few slips every now and again, which has probably halted them from being even higher, but I think they have a great chance.”
QUIZ: Can you identify these 15 Nottingham Forest players purely based on their date of birth and birthplace?
Realistically, the top two has gone for Forest and whilst that’s a huge frustration given the position the side were in after the Leeds victory, promotion is still possible.
As McGugan says, Forest are a pretty consistent, reliable side and they have shown that they can beat anyone in the league on their day.
So, it’s about ensuring they finish in the top six and then it’s about delivering in those high pressure games. The main thing is that Forest have a chance of promotion, something they haven’t had for a long time at this level.
