The defender has signed a three-year deal with the Royals and said he was keen to make the deal happen and was impressed by the efforts made by manager Steve Clarke.

Speaking to the Royals official site, McShane said: ''It's been going on for a few weeks and I'm glad to get it over the line. Reading is such a good club, I know lads who have played for the club before, they have given me great reports, and when I first found out Reading were interested, Steve Clarke came over to Dublin and met up with me there when I was with the Irish team, that was a good gesture which meant a lot. It went to show how much the manager wanted me here, and I feel really welcome.''

The 29-year-old was not only impressed with manager Steve Clarke but admitted he joined Reading because he wanted to be play first team football, an aim that he did not fulfil much at previous club Hull City.

''For the manager to do that makes a massive difference. I want to be wanted, to play first team football and be a big part of the club. I want to be a big part of the team this year.''

The Republic of Ireland international also revealed his plans for the upcoming season and admitted he wants to be part of a winning side once again, much like the one he was involved with at Hull City when he was promoted with them.

''When I spoke to the manager, he sounded very ambitious and that's the same as myself. I want to win, be part of a winning team and I want to be part of a promotion team again."

The defender becomes Reading's third signing in four days as Clarke looks to build a squad capable of winning promotion to the Premier League. McShane, with plenty of experience in the Championship is a good signing for them.
