Former Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jonathan Greening is on trial with League Two side Hartlepool United and could feature in tonight's pre-season friendly against Middlesbrough, reports the Hartlepool Mail

The 35-year-old midfielder was released by Nottingham Forest at the end of the last season and was identified as a target by Pools boss Colin Cooper.

Greening had been on trial with Championship new boys Rotherham United for the past two weeks but he failed to win a contract at the New York Stadium.

Cooper then invited Greening to train with Hartlepool and he joined up with the squad on Tuesday morning.

Fellow trialist Tommy Miller is also set to feature in tonight's friendly.

Pools boss Cooper told the club's official website:

“We’ve had Jonathan in this week who is another experienced player who can handle a football and has played at the top level for the majority of his career.

“To have him in training is a big bonus for us and I am looking forward to seeing him play and I know that he’s looking forward to being involved against Middlesbrough too which is great so we’ll see what happens off the back of that.”

Born in Scarborough, Greening started his career at York City in 1997, scoring twice in 25 matches before leaving to join Manchester United in March 1998 for £500,000 rising to £2 million depending on appearances.

At three years at United he made 27 appearances and won a UEFA Champions League winners medal having been on the bench in the 1999 final against Bayern Munich.

Greening then moved on to Middlesbrough in 2001 and also played in the Premier League for West Brom and Fulham before joining Nottingham Forest in July 2011.
