Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Brown has explained how Kiko Casilla’s clean sheet against Bristol City will be massive for him and the squad going forward.

The Whites got back to winning ways in the Championship against Bristol City last weekend as they recorded a much-needed 1-0 triumph at Elland Road.

Tension had been building to get the results back on track in the race for promotion as the gap closed between Leeds and the chasing pack, from third-place down, narrowed to just goal difference.

Poor results against the likes of Wigan Athletic and Nottingham Forest put the spotlight firmly on goalkeeper Kiko Casilla where his individual errors caused dropped points for Leeds very much against the run of play, but Marcelo Bielsa kept his faith in the Spaniard for the Robins clash and it paid dividends with an assured performance in possession with little to do in terms of actual goalkeeping.

A much-needed clean sheet for Casilla took him to 13 for the season and was a massive confidence booster for the stopper.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds man Michael Brown was commenting on the magnitude of keeping the Robins at bay on top of getting a win. He stated: “It’s like anything, get a win and a result under your belt, it’s what the club needed, that’s what was important.

“Get a result, get a win and it all looks a lot healthier than it did the week before.

“I think any goalkeeper, any defender wants clean sheets, they thrive on it and it’s normal. In training, they don’t want to concede, it’s the competitive edge that we’re all used to.

“That’s just a given at most clubs and the level that they’re at now, when you analyse it, everybody wants to keep clean sheets.”

Up next is a home clash against Reading, a side that haven’t scored a goal past the Whites since the appointment of Bielsa.

The verdict

A win is a massive confidence booster for the players after such a poor run, especially for Casilla who hasn’t had the best of times.

A string of very crucial mistakes has seen Casilla’s form and his mindset dip immensely and there have been justifiable calls to see him dropped for Illan Meslier.

However, a clean sheet could be enough to see him regain the consistency that made him part of the league’s best defence in the first half of the last season.

It will do a world of good for the rest of his defence too as they see the ‘keeper behind them looking back to his best.
