Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Brown has been left baffled at Helder Costa's below-par start to life at Elland Road, after speaking to Football Insider.

The 26-year-old signed for Leeds on a season-long loan deal from Wolves in the summer - a move which will be made permanent for a reported fee of £15m next summer.

Expectations were high when Costa put pen to paper on a move to Elland Road, with the winger achieving promotion to the Premier League with Wolves in 2018.

Costa was influential in Nuno Espirito Santo's side's promotion to the top-flight, but he has somewhat flattered to deceive since making the move to West Yorkshire.

Costa has scored three goals and produced two assists in the Championship this season, but 10 of his 33 league appearances have come from off the bench.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown has admitted that he's been left baffled by Costa's season so far, with the winger's performances splitting the fanbase right down the middle.

He said: "I’m struggling to see how and why he’s not gone on to the next step because he’s gone on and had promotion before, done very, very well and the amount of opportunities Leeds United create, I would have hoped he would have chipped in a little bit more.

"It typified his standing at the moment at Leeds with that left foot finish against Brentford [on Tuesday], that just sort of summed him up.

"I know it was just one opportunity but that probably was. Brilliant, into a key area and it was like a balloon being let down."

Leeds sit second in the Championship after a 1-0 victory over Bristol City at the weekend, and Marcelo Bielsa's side find themselves sitting four points off league leaders West Bromwich Albion.

Up next is a home clash with Reading before a trip to improving Middlesbrough.

The Verdict

Costa has been, on the whole, very disappointing since signing for Leeds from Wolves.

I think Leeds thought they were getting the player that Wolves saw when he helped them win promotion to the top-flight - a player who scored many goals and registered many assists.

He needs to step up to the plate and deliver the goods in the final stages of the season, as Leeds look to finally make a long-awaited return to the top-flight.
