Gary McSheffrey has admitted that he wasn't good enough during his time with Leeds United and revealed he regrets making the loan move to Elland Road.

The winger was brought in by the Whites in January 2010 and was seen as a major coup as the club looked to win promotion back to the Championship after joining from top-flight Birmingham City.

Whilst Simon Grayson's side ultimately achieved their main objective, McSheffrey didn't make the impact many had hoped.

And, he has opened up on that move to Birmingham Live, with the 37-year-old acknowledging that it was the wrong decision from a football perspective, even if he was proud to represent such a big club.

"It was the right club at the wrong time. I got sucked into the size of the club. For whatever reason I didn’t adapt to the level and didn’t play as well as I should have. They were expecting me to hit the ground running and come in and absolutely smash up the division – but I hadn’t really been playing regular, consistent performances for quite a while.

"It is a regret because it is a great club and I would have loved to have had a longer time there but ultimately I didn’t play well enough to secure a longer deal."

The verdict

It's nice to see such honesty from an ex-player and you can't really argue with McSheffrey's assessment here.

He arrived in Yorkshire with a big reputation having shone in the Championship for Birmingham and Coventry over the years but it just didn't work out for him in the third tier at Leeds.

That happens and the winger won't be the only footballer out there to regret making a move at a certain time in their career.
