Leeds United fans will be bitterly disappointed as they threw away a fantastic opportunity to book their spot in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

The Whites fell to a shock defeat to Derby County at Elland Road, but there was one positive that Marcelo Bielsa will have taken from the two legs.

Jamie Shackleton's performances on the day stood out for all of the right reasons as he put in an impressive shift in the centre of the Leeds midfield on the night.

In an interview with Football Insider, former Leeds United defender, Danny Mills outlined Shackleton's attributes that he has already displayed this season.

"Shackleton has done very well when he’s played for Leeds.

"He’s quick, tenacious, drives forward with the ball and can see a pass."

Mills also felt that Bielsa should be starting the youngster alongside Kalvin Phillips next season, as Shackleton offers the creativity that Phillips can't in this Leeds team.

"He can slot into the midfield area next season, no problem. If you have him and Kalvin Phillips, you need someone creative alongside them."

It remains to be seen as to whether Shackleton will be given a regular spot in Marcelo Bielsa's starting XI next season, but he's certainly given the Leeds boss with a welcome selection dilemma ahead of the 2019/2020 league campaign.

The Verdict:

He's spot on.

Shackleton has really impressed me when he's been in the team, and I feel that if he'd have been in the team earlier than when he came in, then Leeds could have won promotion automatically.

It's vital that they build their team around him next season.
