Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan insists the Whites are still in with a chance of winning promotion despite last weekend’s significant loss, report BBC Radio Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were bumped out of the automatic promotion places after a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United who jumped above them in the process, but Whelan insists that their season is not yet over.

“There's still 24 points to play for – that's a lot of points and a lot of games to be won,” he said.

“There will be teams who will not go through the rest of the season unbeaten, I can guarantee that.

“There will be slip-ups from Norwich and Sheffield United along the way, and we have to make sure we capitalise on that.”

Chris Basham scored the only goal of the clash at Elland Road, pouncing on a Billy Sharp pass to slot home following an error from Liam Cooper.

It is a result that leaves the Whites sat in third place, one point behind the Blades and five behind league-leaders Norwich City.

After the upcoming international break, Leeds will welcome strugglers Millwall to Elland Road and will be determined to get their promotion push back on track.

The verdict

Whelan is spot on here.

Perspective is badly lacking from man Leeds’ fans reaction to the defeat. Yes, they lost to a promotion rival but it is far from the end of the season.

After their 4-0 thrashing of West Brom, it looked like promotion was guaranteed again so it just goes to show how quickly things can change.
