Noel Whelan feels that Stuart Dallas is the perfect fit for Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa as a wing-back after his strong start to the season.

The versatile Northern Ireland international has played the first two league games of the campaign at right-back with Luke Ayling out injured and he has impressed as the Yorkshire side have picked up four points.

And, former player Whelan, who now covers the club for the BBC, told Football Insider that Bielsa's attacking philosophy has benefited the player.

"For someone that’s not a natural, he is your more natural wing-back these days. I think it suits the style of Marcelo Bielsa, I think that’s why he likes him so much. He does attack a lot down the wings, he does like his wing-backs to get nice and high with that security of Kalvin Phillips in between the two centre-halves.

"It works, I’ve seen a big improvement in his defending, he looks fit and strong, he’s enjoying the role now because he’s probably a little bit more confident."

The 28-year-old is sure to continue at full-back away to Wigan this weekend.

The Verdict

Most fans would agree with this assessment from Whelan as Dallas has started well and is an important member of the squad.

Obviously, he is used to playing further up the pitch, so there's no doubt that Bielsa's attacking style gets the best out of the player at full-back because he is given a license to attack.

It's now down to Dallas to continue this form in Ayling's absence against the Latics on Saturday and he will be a vital player for the remainder of the campaign due to his versatility.
