Kemar Roofe was Leeds United's top scorer last season as the club finished in their highest position in the Championship since relegation from the Premier League in 2004.

Roofe amassed 14 goals in 32 league appearances for the club as they just missed out on promotion to the Premier League after defeat in the play-offs.

Given this, many Leeds were fans were surprised and disappointed that the former Oxford United man opted for a move to Belgian side Anderlecht.

Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Belang van Limburg, Roofe revealed that it was Vincent Kompany that proved the decisive factor in his switch to Belgium.

"That smile is still set on my face. I was even amazed that Kompany knew me and without Vincent I would never have signed at Anderlecht, my dream is to play Premier League one day, but with Vincent I wanted to embark on an adventure at Anderlecht," Roofe revealed.

Roofe discussed how he believed playing under Marcelo Bielsa was one of the key factors that led Vincent Kompany to take note of his ability.

"That played a part. In your career, the coaches you encounter are often copies of each other. They tell the same thing with a few accents of their own, however, Marcelo Bielsa is original. He sees football as science. When you look at his teams for the first time, you think: it’s so complicated."

Roofe like a number of Leeds' squad dramatically improved under the former Marseille boss and despite his regimes being complicated at first, it got easier to understand.

"Once you get the hang of it, everything happens automatically. Bielsa teaches you step by step with long tactical analysis," Roofe told Het Belang van Limburg.

After missing the start of Anderlecht's season through an ankle injury, Roofe has featured in every minute of the side's last six games, scoring four goals in that time.

The Verdict

Much has been made about Marcelo Bielsa's unique training methods and it is no surprise to hear that Roofe and probably other player's found El Loco's training methods a little complicated to begin with.

Leeds had gone through a series of managers who were hard to distinguish in terms of style but with Bielsa, Leeds now have an identity, one that is recognisable throughout English football.

It will be no surprise to hear that Bielsa is with his players every step of the way and delves into thorough tactical analysis with his squad and will be nice for Leeds fans to hear that Roofe still holds Marcelo Bielsa in high esteem.
