Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan claims Pablo Hernandez's return will give the Whites a huge boost for their clash with Sheffield Wednesday, while he thinks the Spaniard will immediately re-enter the starting line-up.

Hernandez has missed out Leeds' last three league matches after suffering an injury during the early stages of his side's defeat to Fulham back in December, but Marclo Bielsa has now confirmed that the attacking midfielder is now available for selection.

The Whites have only managed to win one match in Hernandez's absence, but Bielsa's men are still sitting level on points with West Brom at the Championship summit, and Whelan thinks this injury comeback will now benefit Leeds enormously.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan stated his belief that Hernandez's return to fitness has come at an ideal time for the Elland Road outfit, while the ex-striker also thinks the 34-year-old will occupy the number 10 role against the Owls.

“It’s a massive boost and it’s come at a great time,” Whelan said.

“Obviously we expected Pablo to be out a little longer than he has been but it’s a massive bonus to have him back. Will he go straight into the side? I would probably think so, in a number 10 capacity.

“It’s a huge boost for Leeds because this back end of the season is going to be so important now so hopefully we can now try keep him fit.”

Hernandez has seen his playing time somewhat restricted this term as a result of his injury problems, but he has still managed to make 17 appearances for the Whites since August, during which time he has scored three goals and registered four assists.

The Verdict

Whelan is correct in that Hernandez's return to fitness has already given the Whites an enormous boost ahead of their clash with Wednesday, particularly given there was an expectation that the injury would have kept him out for longer.

Hernandez now looks set to play a key role for his side during this decisive second half of the campaign - providing he can maintain his fitness - and Bielsa will surely look to get him re-settled in the Leeds side as soon as possible.

The Spaniard can cause some serious damage for the Whites if he is able to immediately re-discover his best form upon his return, and his presence will give Wednesday an additional worry ahead of their meeting with their Yorkshire rivals.
