Former Derby midfielder James Bailey could be set to begin talks with Crewe Alexandra over a return to Gresty Road.
The Stoke Sentinel has reported that manager Steve Davis is interested in bringing the player back to the club where he started his career over seven years ago.
He will, however, face competition from Sheffield United.
Bailey joined the Rams from Crewe in 2010 for an initial £1 million and went on to make over 59 appearances.
In his first season at Derby he was named Young Player of the Season and was subject to interest from Premier League clubs, however he later fell out of favour at the iPro and had been on the transfer list since 2012.
Crewe were linked with a move for the 25-year-old last summer but could not afford the player’s wage demands.
Wages could be less of an issue now that Bailey is not at a club, however his wage demands are likely to still be relatively high and promotion favourites Sheffield United will compete with the Railwaymen for the player’s signature.
