Former Derby County captain Matt Oakley believes momentum can take the rams into the Premier League.

The captain that took Derby all the way to the Premier League in his first season, says the club is in better shape now to avoid relegation if they do win promotion.

He central midfielder led the rams at Wembley in 2007  where they won 1-0 against West Bromwich Albion and is backing a repeat result against Queens Park Rangers.

”It is lovely to see the Derby team in a great position to put the club back where it should be”, said the Exeter City man.

”Steve McClaren seems to have come in and made a big impact. You can see that with the number of goals Derby have scored and their attractive way of playing”

”I saw their semi-final first leg against Brighton when they went one down and reacted really well, which shows strength of character” said Oakley.

Oakley joined the Rams as a free agent from Southampton in 2006 and was one of manager Billy Davies’ early signings. He made 42 appearances in the promotion campaign and scored six goals in the process.

Matt Oakley’s former side Derby County face Queens Park Rangers in the Sky BET Championship play-off final on Saturday at Wembley stadium.
