Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has told Talksport that he could get involved in the deal to takeover Charlton Athletic.

Charlton owner Rolan Duchatelet wants to sell the club he has owned since 2014, but the Evening Standard report that the talks with prospective owner Mehmet Dalman have broken down.

Dalman is currently chairman of Cardiff City, and has many years experience in football in varying capacities. He was though to be keen on purchasing the club but he and Duchatelet have failed to agree on a price, with Duchatelet apparently wanting £50m.

Jordan knows what the takeover process is like, and he claims he could support Dalman in his bid if he desired too.

Speaking to Talksport, Jordan said: "I know the shape of this deal, and if I want to come to the table and own a percentage of a particular part of Charlton, I can.

"But I’d be surprised if he gets anywhere near what he’s asking for; if he’s asking for £50million, I’ll be amazed if he gets it."

The suggestions from Jordan indicate there is an opportunity at Charlton for anyone willing to take it on. Duchatelet has been the recipient of numerous protests throughout his tenure and despite returning to the Championship he still wants to leave.

That is good news for Charlton fans, and if it is not to be Dalman who takes over there could be others wanting to takeover, although Jordan hinted that the asking price may create a situation in which there are a "limited amount of buyers".

The Verdict

From a Charlton perspective, it is difficult to tell if this is good news. The breakdown in talks which was confirmed yesterday would have added to their frustrations but Jordan's admissions suggest it is a deal which is easy to get involved with, and therefore there could be many potential bidders.

The stumbling block will be Duchatelet's £50m evaluation, which has increased drastically upon promotion to the Championship. Dalman is a sensible football man and if he believes that price is too much then that could deter other would0be suitors.
