Former Colchester United stars Sammie Szmodics and Frankie Kent have reunited at the club during the week along with current midfielder Tom Lapslie.

Both Szmodics and Kent left the club the this summer after impressing in League Two last season but headed back to the U's on Tuesday night for their EFL Trophy clash with Tottenham's under-21 side.

The day after the match, the former duo took Lapslie out for lunch, with Szmodics sharing a shot of them eating in Wagamamas on his Instagram story, along with the caption: "Back with the boys."

Last season saw Colchester push hard for a place in the League Two play-offs, only to fall agonisingly short in the end, although Szmodics and Kent found their way out of the division.

After scoring 14 goals, the former was rewarded with a move to Championship promotion hopefuls Bristol City whilst the latter made the move to League One, joining Peterborough United's defensive unit.

John McGreal's side have made a decent start to the 2019/20 season, however, currently sat in eighth place after 12 games, just one point off the play-off pace.

With no international break coming their way, this weekend sees them travel to Crawley Town as they look to continue to climb the table.

The verdict

It is always nice to see former players going back to support their old sides, isn't it?

Both Kent and Szomdics were key players in their promotion push last season and both would undoubtedly love to see the Us promoted this season as well.

Lapslie will undoubtedly be key to that happening too.
