Former Charlton midfielder Beram Kayal has apologised for not being able to contribute more at the club after seeing his loan spell cut short due to a groin injury.

Kayal initially joined Lee Bowyer's side on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Brighton over the summer, but the midfielder was only able to register six appearances for Charlton as a result of his persistent injury struggles.

The Addicks have now confirmed that the Israel international has returned to his parent club after undergoing surgery on an injury he picked up in November, with Kayal having now not featured in the South Londoners' last 12 matches.

The 31-year-old's fitness troubles saw him form part of Charlton's recent injury crisis where more than 10 first-team players were out of contention for Bowyer's side, with this seeing the Addicks' results suffer as they dropped to 19th in the Championship table.

Kayal has now taken to Instagram to share a personal message to Charlton fans, with the midfielder thanking the club while also apologising for the fact he was only able to make six appearances during his loan stint.

The Verdict

This seemed like an exciting signing when Kayal arrived at The Valley towards the end of the summer transfer window, but Charlton knew they were taking a risk given the midfielder's injury troubles, and it appears this gamble has not paid off.

Kayal was only able to show glimpses of his quality during his time in South London, with injuries preventing him from ever coming close to establishing himself in the Charlton side, and Bowyer must now seek a replacement for the midfielder.

This particularly seems to be the case given Charlton also lost Conor Gallagher following Chelsea's decision to recall him earlier this week, with the Addicks now looking particularly short of fit players in the centre of the park.
