Former Championship boss issues verdict on Leeds’ promotion hopes

Speaking on this morning’s Sky Sports Premier League Daily Show, former Leeds United striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has praised Garry Monk for turning the club into promotion contenders.

Leeds started the campaign in disastrous style, and following a defeat to Huddersfield Town in September, the Whites were in the bottom three of the Sky Bet Championship table.

Since then, Monk has masterminded a phenomenal turnaround, and after Friday’s 3-1 victory over Birmingham City, Leeds are sat fourth in the Championship table.

Monk’s side trail Brighton and Hove Albion, who are second, by six-points with 11 fixtures of the campaign remaining, and Hasselbaink believes automatic promotion will be a step too far, he said: “I think they’ll definitely be in the Play-Offs, but we all know that’s a lottery at the end of the season.”

Hasselbaink, who scored 42 goals for Leeds during his two seasons with the club, praised Monk and gave his thoughts on the looming Play-Off campaign, he continued: “I think Monk has done an exceptional job at Leeds, he’s stuck with it and brought younger players through.

“It’s in the Leeds DNA, I think they have a huge chance of gaining promotion. They’re not the best team, but I don’t think they are the worst team either. They have a real chance in the Play-Offs.”

Monk’s side are currently eight-points clear of seventh placed Fulham, who the Whites face on Tuesday evening at Craven Cottage, knowing victory will see them almost destined for a top-six finish.
