Derby County manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that former Celtic and Hibernian defender Efe Ambrose is currently on trial with the club.

The 30-year-old was released by Hibs at the start of January with Derby deciding to offer him a trial before deciding whether or not to sign the free agent.

Ambrose made 169 appearances during his five years with Celtic before making the move to Edinburgh in 2017, initially on loan, signing permanently in the summer of 2017.

The versatile defender made over 80 appearances for the club but was deemed surplus to requirements at the start of the new year.

Just two new faces arrived at Pride Park during the January window with Ashley Cole joining from LA Galaxy on a free transfer and Andy King moving from Leicester on loan.

Derby currently sit just outside the play-offs in seventh place with 29 matches played but are only behind sixth-placed Bristol City on goal difference.

This weekend sees them welcome in-form Hull City to the East Midlands as they look to get their promotion push back on track.

The verdict

This is a bit of a questionable signing.

Derby could do with more depth in their backline but I struggle to believe that a player who could not get into the Hibernian team will be good enough for a Championship promotion push.

He will have a point to prove so I may well be wrong but I cannot see it working well.
