The 52-year-old will be assisted by former Gers captain David Weir, who has also signed a three-year deal. The pair worked together at Brentford and guided the Bees to the Championship play-offs last season.

There is set to be a press conference at Ibrox at 14:00 BST on Monday where the duo will be presented to the media.

The BBC understands there is no role at the club for former Valencia coach Ian Cathro.

Rangers chairman Dave King hinted last week that there were five managers in the running for the job.

Cathro was linked with the position after leaving his role of assisting Valencia coach Nuno Espirito.

Stuart McCall had been in temporary charge after Kenny McDowell resigned in March.

The former Bradford City boss led the Ibrox outfit to the Scottish Premiership play-off final, where they lost to his former club Motherwell.

Warburton took charge of Brentford in December 2013 following Uwe Rosler's departure to Wigan. Weir joined Warburton at Griffin Park a week after his appointment.

The 52-year-old had worked as a first-team coach for two years before being named manager and oversaw the opening of the club's academy.

He guided the Bees to promotion from League One in 2014 and then to the Championship play-offs a year later, where they were beaten in the semi-final by Middlesbrough.

Brentford had announced in February that Warburton was to leave the club at the end of the season following a managerial structure change at Griffin Park.
