In a hard-hitting article in the Daily Mirror, Savage revealed how he received many threats during his controversial career: "As a player, I was a pantomime villain and I had my limitations. But I was also good enough to captain four Premier League clubs, win 39 caps for my country and be transferred for fees running into millions of pounds."

"For my trouble, I’ve been spat on, punched, had full beer cans thrown at me, had graffiti daubed on my gates, fireworks shot at my house and been intimidated by men wearing balaclavas turning up at my own home."

At the time of his departure from St Andrews he claimed to be the most hated man in Birmingham, due in the main to citing a desire to move closer to home as the motivation for his move. It transpired that Birmingham was closer to his Wrexham base than Blackburn, angering supporters at St Andrews.

The Verdict

Savage has never been one to shy away from controversy, but this latest incident is nothing more than a bit of fun which hopefully won't be taken too seriously.

The manner of his Blues' departure might have been provocative at the time, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge and I'm sure Birmingham fans have far more to worry about than Robbie Savage.
