Former Birmingham City winger and boyhood fan Joe Newell has hit out at his former club for their decision to part ways with manager Garry Monk on Tuesday night.

The shock decision was revealed via the club's website, sparking plenty of outrage among fans, both of the Blues and other clubs, and Hibernian winger Newell was no different.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday morning, the 26-year-old wrote: "Gary Monk gone. Just when the club is getting a bit of stability and going in the right direction after a bad few years we f*** it up. Just don’t get it."

Monk's assistant throughout his time at St. Andrews, Pep Clotet, will take charge of first team matters for the time being whilst the rest of his backroom staff will remain as well.

Last season saw the Blues finish in 17th place despite operating under a transfer embargo throughout both windows.

They were also handed a nine-point penalty for breaking FFP regulations during Harry Redknapp's rain. Without it, they would have finished 14th.

Despite graduating through the youth system at Birmingham, Newell never played a match for the first team and was transferred to Peterborough United in 2009.

He then moved onto Rotherham United in 2015 before signing a pre-contract agreement with Hibs this summer.

The verdict

I think Newell's sentiment's sum up the feelings of the fanbase pretty well.

Monk had done a remarkable job at St. Andrews. He completely rebuilt the connection between the fans and the team which carried them at times last season.

This is another season that shows the startling disconnect that a club's hierarchy can have with their fans and it is really sad to see.
