Former Aston Villa player Lee Hendrie has heaped praise on John Terry ahead of tomorrow's play-off final against Fulham at Wembley.

The Chelsea legend joined the West Midlands side in the summer in a move that attracted a lot of headlines given his profile.

Yet, he has handled the step down to the Championship with ease, playing a key part in Villa's promotion push and Terry was also named in the EFL Championship team of the year.

And, speaking to Sky Sports, Villa fan Hendrie was delighted with Terry's overall influence at Villa Park this season.

"He has fitted in so well at Aston Villa, not just on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. Since he's come into the Aston Villa fold, having someone of his experience and knowledge, he has been absolutely superb."

"He's been like a Rolls Royce at times - he reads the game so well, his last-ditch challenges. Overall I think he has been a really key player in that Villa structure and he's passed down a lot of knowledge to the younger lads in that Villa squad."

The Verdict

There's no doubt that Terry has added a lot to Villa. On the pitch he has been a very strong player although his defensive partner James Chester perhaps deserves more credit.

However, as Hendrie mentions, his influence extends to off the pitch. There is a real bond between players and fans and a strong mentality in the squad now.

Whilst that's not solely down to Terry, there's no doubt his professionalism and experience have helped create that.
