Bristol City have been searching for a new goalkeeper for the whole summer.

Last January, the Robins signed Fabian Giefer on loan from Schalke but he has moved to Augsburg this summer and Lee Johnson is looking to bring someone in.

His current number one choice is Frank Fielding but Johnson feels that he needs some competition for the starting 'keeper spot.

The back-up duo of Ivan Lucic and Max O'Leary are both very promising but could do with loan spells away from the club before staking a claim for a first team place.

Their goalkeeper search has seen them miss out on the likes of Fulham stopper Marcus Bettinelli and Middlesbrough's Connor Ripley among others.

They have now handed a trial to Ogmundur Kristinsson.

The Iceland international has dropped to second choice at Hammarby IF in Sweden and is now searching for a new club.

While the 28-year-old might be a decent goalkeeper if he is given the chance, Bristol City should be considering another man.

Fleetwood Town's Alex Cairns would be the ideal solution to their 'keeper problems.

The former Leeds United man established himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in League One last season, helping Fleetwood Town reach the play-offs.

The 24-year-old's fine form between the sticks has carried into this season too and he made a magnificent triple reaction save against Northampton Town to preserve his clean sheet and earn Fleetwood the three points.

The Trawlermen will not want to lose Cairns but he is a young, solid, English goalkeeper who would add competition for places with Fielding at Bristol City.
