Birmingham City's ongoing pursuit of Stewart Downing appears to have stalled in recent days, reportedly down to the ex-England international's wage demands.

Despite being told by current club Middlesbrough that he can leave on a free, the winger seems to be digging his heels in, and Harry Redknapp may need to look elsewhere as he looks to inject some much needed creativity into a side that so evidently lacked it last season.

On the opposite side of the spectrum to the tried and tested Downing, is the unproven, whilst highly-lauded right midfielder, Liverpool's Harry Wilson.

Harry Redknapp is renowned for utilising wingers, and has made no bones about adding wide men to his squad, having been linked with Aaron Lennon, John Hayes and of course the aforementioned Downing at differing points of the close season.

20-year-old Wilson spent last season in Liverpool's under-23 side making a handful of appearances in the first team squad, with just one of those resulting in any game time.

But Jurgen Klopp will surely be keeping a close eye on the youngster, who boasted an impressive record in the Premier League 2 last term, scoring 12 times and providing 7 assists.

As Redknapp's search for wingers may have to divert from experience such as Downing, which could break the wage structure at St Andrew's and focus it's attention on raw talent such as Harry Wilson's.

It is a compromise that could suit all parties, as Wilson who is low down the pecking order of a host of talented attacking minded midfielders at Anfield, but could light the creative spark that Birmingham have been missing.
