Aston Villa have confirmed that midfielder Tom Carroll will miss the rest of the season through injury and has returned to parent club Swansea City after undergoing hip surgery.

The 26-year-old has struggled all season with a hip problem and only made two substitute appearances for Villa during his short loan spell.

The midfielder made 13 appearances for Swansea during the first half of the campaign, but was then ruled out until the new year.

He was one of three signings for Villa on transfer deadline day in January, along with defender Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth and full-back full-back Frederic Guilbert from Ligue 1 side Caen.

Things did not work out for Carroll as hoped at Villa Park and the midfielder must now try to focus on getting fit for pre-season ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Swansea are currently 14th in the Championship table, ten points behind Villa who now occupy the final play-off place after a brilliant run of five successive victories.

Villa fans were quick to react to the news on social media, with some showing support for the player and wishing him the best for his recovery and others suggesting that his loan spell at Villa Park was a waste of time.
