According to Australian outlet The Sydney Morning Herald, Blackburn Rovers target Brandon O'Neill has also been scouted by Nottingham Forest, so there could be a transfer tussle on the way to secure his signing.

O'Neill played a vital role in Sydney FC's success this year, even scoring a penalty in the shoot-out of the Grand Final to be crowned champions - and his form hasn't gone unnoticed.

QPR are also reportedly interested in the midfielder, and The Sydney Morning Herald claim he could be available for £400,000.

Forest could be in the market for a new midfielder with Claudio Yacob being linked to Olympiacos, but would O'Neill be a good fit. Our FLW Six Point Opinion takes a closer look at the possible move.

First of all, who is Brandon O'Neill?

"O'Neill is a 25-year-old Australian midfielder who has never played outside of his native country.

"He has played for Sydney FC since 2015, when he signed from title rivals Perth Glory, and since his move Sydney have been crowned champions of the A-League on two occasions.

"Having been born in Perth, he came through the academy at Perth Glory but only made 17 appearances for them. At Sydney FC he has played 127 games, scoring nine goals and assisting 10."

What type of midfielder is he?

"The Australian is a defensive minded player, and he can also play in a back four when called upon.

"He reads the game very well and is tough in the tackle, so in many ways is the perfect replacement for Yacob should he leave.

"Forest need a player like him - someone to organise the midfield and protect the defence, and O'Neill could become a very important player for them."

Is he ready for the step-up to the Championship?

"The only way we'll know is if he makes the move. The A-League has improved in quality over the last few years and although it is still some way off the Championship, O'Neill could adjust.

"His game is the same at every level, he knows his job and it isn't based on technical ability but instead hard work and intelligence. Those are the easiest attributes to adapt to a new league and if he starts well he could be flying by the end of the season."

Would he start regularly for Forest?

"It may take a while for him to break into the team with the players currently at the club but if he impresses when he gets he chance he could easily become a regular starter before long.

"Martin O'Neill is a big fan of defensive midfielders and much of his tactics are based on the structure of his team and keeping it tight at the back - Brandon O'Neill would be a big player in that regard so he could become more important to the team as the season progresses.

"Of course, he would have to show signs of his quality early on. The Championship can be unforgiving and we have seen many Forest players cast aside after failing to impress - Yacob and Liam Bridcutt were examples of that last season."

Is a reported asking price of £400,000 a reasonable price for him?

"It could prove to be a real bargain. He is only 25 and is yet to impress in England, but if he manages that then he will have a lot of suitors and his valuation will be in the millions.

"On the other hand, he is of course a risk, as any signing from the A-League would be. £400,000 isn't a great deal of money to a club in the Championship, particularly if they sell fringe players like they have with Soudani.

"He is one of Sydney FC's key players so it is expected that they would demand a lot for him. Considering that, £400,000 is not a huge sum so it is one that could work out in Forest's favour."

How good could he be in the next few years?

"A lot depends on what he does this summer. If he does move to England then he will have to adjust to a new, quicker playing style and that could set him back.

"However, given his style he could do very well, and if he plays regularly in a winning team he could prove to be a thorn in the side of most Championship teams and within a couple of years could be one of the best midfielders in the division.

"Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is very ambitious and plans to take Forest to the Premier League. O'Neill could be part of that journey but due to Forest's large turnover of playing personnel he will need to make an impression straight away."
