According to reliable football journalist Alan Nixon, Barnsley are on the verge of signing a striker.

Barnsley have been trying to add another striker for some time now to provide competition up front for Tom Bradshaw and Ike Ugbo.

Alan Nixon is now reporting that Barnsley are set to sign "the French striker".

The "French striker" in question is believed to be Mamadou Thiam, as confirmed as he replied to a later tweet.

A previous report by The Daily Mail stated that Barnsley were hoping to snap up Mamadou Thiam for a transfer fee of £900,000.

At 14:01 GMT yesterday (10th August), Alan Nixon tweeted that Barnsley should complete this deal within 24 hours so it is expected to be finalised today.

Thiam will sign from Dijon FCO.

The 22-year-old, who can play as a striker or as a winger, helped his side to stay up in Ligue 1 last season but he is now closing in on a move to England.

The Senegal youth international, who was born and raised in France, has also spent time on loan at Clermont.

Barnsley are hoping to wrap up a deal for the versatile forward imminently as they continue to seek replacements all over the field.

The Verdict

Barnsley need a striker and Mamadou Thiam could prove to be good, especially at a low price.

However, the 22-year-old has a modest goal scoring record in France and is unproven in England.

It's a risk by Barnsley and I probably would have opted for a quick fix rather than a gamble.
