Fernando Forestieri is often the hero for Sheffield Wednesday, and is almost never the villain at Hillsborough, however, it was the Italian’s penalty that cost the Owls a place at Wembley this week.

After playing out a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town earlier this week in the Sky Bet Championship’s play-off semi-final, penalties were required to see who would meet Reading at Wembley on May 29th.

Wednesday were trailing 4-3 when Forestieri stepped up to take his penalty, and needing to score to keep the Owls in the match, the forward’s lashed spot-kick was saved by Danny Ward, sending Huddersfield to Wembley.

It is the second successive year the Owls have failed to clinch promotion via the play-offs, and everyone inside Hillsborough on Wednesday evening was visibly gutted – particularly Forestieri.

The 27-year old has taken to Twitter to describe Wednesday’s play-off defeat as the worst feeling he has felt in his life, before thanking his teammates and the club’s supporters.
