Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire has revealed that the EFL's case against Sheffield Wednesday is stronger than their case against Derby County.

This season, the EFL has charged both clubs with misconduct relating to the organisation’s profitability and sustainability guidelines.

The case against both relates to the controversial sales of their stadiums to their owners, an action taken to help them stay within P&S guidelines in previous years.

It is understood that they could face a severe punishment if found guilty, with possible sanctions including a fine, a points deduction or a transfer embargo.

How the current delay to the season, which has now been ongoing for nearly two months, will impact both cases remains unknown but it was reported by the Telegraph last month that the Owls would face a hearing in July.

Speaking to Benjamin Bloom, Maguire assessed how the cases against the two clubs differed.

He said: "The case against Sheffield Wednesday has more in favour of it. If Sheffield Wednesday get off, I think Derby certainly will.

"If Sheffield Wednesday get found guilty, I think Derby potentially still have a chance.

"That's where we are at present."

The two clubs have had differing fortunes on the pitch in 2020.

Only Fulham have won more Championship points than Derby since the turn of the year, while Wednesday have won just twice in their last 14 league games.

Has Fernando Forestieri done these 11 things at Sheffield Wednesday? Have a go now!

The Verdict

Maguire is a hugely respected voice on football finance matters, so it's interesting to get his insight into how the two cases differ.

These comments will likely please Rams fans a huge amount more than they will Wednesday, who it appears are more likely to face punishment.

It will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few months.
