It’s been a superb start to the season for Leeds United, who under Marcelo Bielsa have been amongst the Championship’s standout sides so far.

Leeds have been dealt a huge blow today, though, with confirmation coming from the club that Patrick Bamford is facing up to four months on the sidelines with a PCL injury.

Bamford injured his knee featuring for the club’s under-23s last week, with Bielsa now facing a lengthy period without his £7m summer signing.

For supporters, they should be disappointed with the club and fearing the worst.

Leeds’ decision to put Bamford in the under-23s last week was a brave one, with an injury always a risk.

There was logic behind the decision, as Bamford, 25, has found himself behind Kemar Roofe this season, with the striker’s opportunities limited. The clash against Bristol City offered Bamford a chance to get some minutes under his belt and force his way into Bielsa’s plans.

However, Leeds’ plan has backfired and now the club will be kicking themselves, with some supporters sure to blast their decision to risk Bamford during the international break.

What impact Bamford’s injury has on Leeds’ season remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt it is a big blow.

Kemar Roofe has four goals to his name and was the Championship’s Player of the Month in August. However, Bamford’s injury puts a lot of pressure on the 25-year-old, who now needs to consistently deliver, with Leeds not having any other senior options to lead the line.

Bielsa’s side have made an unbeaten start to the season, but maintaining anything like this form between now and Christmas was going to be difficult anyway, and now it looks like a mammoth task for the Whites without Bamford.

There should be concern on the Elland Road terraces.
