Ipswich Town midfielder Flynn Downes has admitted that he can't wait to return to League One action this weekend, ahead of the clash with Blackpool at Portman Road.

The Tractor Boys finally return to action in the third tier this weekend and will be looking to continue their promising start to the campaign.

Following their relegation from the Championship last season, Paul Lambert's have made a very strong start to life in League One and currently sit second in the table.

After over two weeks without a league game, Ipswich now face two home important games in the space of four days - fifth-placed Blackpool tomorrow afternoon, before league leaders Wycombe Wanderers visit Portman Road on Tuesday night.

Ipswich's last three matches have been in two different cup competitions and Lambert has decided to rest some of his key players in that time, and give some of his youngsters a chance.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich midfielder Downes - who has been away with the England Under-20s during the recent international break - has insisted that the players can't wait to return to action.

He said: "I feel like I haven't played in months! I can't wait to get back out there.

"We're raring to go. We'll be back at it again. From what I hear the boys have been training hard. We'll be good."

Downes has been an important player Ipswich so far this season, making 14 appearances in all competitions. The 20-year-old has only scored one goal this season though and has admitted that he's hoping to add more goals to his game.

He added: "Me personally, I'm feeling good. I've been saying it for a while now that I need to add goals to my game and I feel like one is coming. I need that feeling again!"

The Verdict

Ipswich have made a very promising start to the season in League One. There's still a long way to go, but fans at Portman Road have every reason to feel optimistic about their side's chances of automatic promotion this season.

It was a sensible decision for Lambert to rest some of his key players for the recent cup matches. Not only did it give them a valuable opportunity to recharge, but it also gave some of the younger players a chance to impress.

As for Downes, he's a promising young player and could have an important role to play in Ipswich's promotion push this season. There's a good chance that he'll return to the starting line-up tomorrow and he'll be determined to make an impact.
