The Sky Bet Championship has certainly been brilliant to watch so far and, in relation to that, Leeds United have been one of the clubs to beat.

Marcelo Bielsa has been quick to adapt to the game in this country and so we caught up with Kevin Nicholson, the youngest coach in the country to hold the UEFA Pro Licence – what you need to manage in the Premier League.

Indeed, with over a decade of working as a coach across age groups for the likes of Derby County, Cardiff City and Exeter among others, he knows plenty about getting players to perform and develop and is far from surprised by the start the Argentine has made:

“He’s someone that I’ve been aware of for many years. He’s obviously a top coach, there’s no doubt about that, he’s experienced, he’s wise in terms of the game and he’s been doing it for 28 years across different continents.

“He would have seen a lot of matches and been involved with a lot of different players and having studied some of his work when he was at Athletic Bilbao and Marseille in particular it’s no surprise to have seen the impact he’s made.

“I’ve studied the way he likes to play and train and you can see that transferred into how he is imprinting a style on Leeds this season. What’s been the impressive thing is the style, it’s fast-football, playing out from the back – fast attacking football - but what’s impressed most is the mentality and approach that he has given the players in order to go and believe they can win games home and away.

“I heard one of his players say that he doesn’t see an away game any different to a home game and I think that is refreshing to hear that you just go an attack a game irrelevant of what stadium you are at. They are reaping the rewards from that and you could see that only at the weekend winning 3-0 at Carrow Road. Not many teams are able to do that, so I’m really impressed but not surprised having studied his methods.”

Certainly, the Whites have been impressed and for many it’s only their high-intensity approach that might see them slip up this season. Nicholson, though, thinks Bielsa will be ready for that:

“That’ll be fascinating to see [how they deal with the rigours of the campaign.] The Championship as we’re all aware is a very long season. It’s not just the 46 games it’s the cup games you’re involved in too so you end up playing over 50 games.

“The strength of a squad comes into it there’s no doubt about that but it’s just about building momentum and consistency over a long period of time - that’s what you have to do in any league to achieve success.

“He’s already started to build that momentum and it’ll be interesting to see if he can continue the consistency that they’ve got at the moment in terms of the results they are getting.

“Again, through his experience there’s probably no-one better that will know whether that tempo can be sustained here. His experience at Athletic Bilbao for example will have taught him how to maintain it over a long period of time because they play a lot of games in Spain. He’s got a difficult job but he has shown so far that he could be a real success in England."
