Fleetwood Town are reportedly on the verge of signing free agent Josh Morris.

The winger was released by Scunthorpe United at the end of the season after grabbing 37 goals and 30 assists in 125 appearances for the club over three years.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Morris is due to have a medical with the Lancashire club today.

The Englishman was limited by injuries last season but looked sharp when he was fit, scoring five goals and making six assists from his 19 League One appearances.

The limited availability of Morris contributed to a disappointing season for Scunthorpe, who were relegated from League One.

The 27-year-old has been rumoured to have caught the attention of multiple Championship and League One clubs, and it appears Fleetwood boss Joey Barton is moving quickly to bring him back to Highbury Stadium.

Morris’ arrival would be his third spell with the Cod Army, after spending the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons on loan with Fleetwood–during which he scored 10 goals in 64 appearances for the club and helped them achieve promotion from League Two.

Barton will be looking to add some extra quality to his squad as he attempts to build on Fleetwood’s 11th-place finish in the 2018/19 campaign and push for promotion this season.

Verdict

This looks like a good piece of business from Fleetwood. Morris was sorely missed by Scunthorpe when he was out last season and should be an effective player for Barton.

He’s shown while at Glanford Park that he can be a useful weapon in League One and he has previous with the Cod Army, which should mean he has no issues settling in.

Following the arrival of Danny Andrews, if the club can get this done ahead of the other clubs rumoured to be interested, it will be a great start to the summer.
