Young defender Darnell Johnson is ‘delighted’ after he made a dream debut for Fleetwood Town, scoring in Saturday’s game against Cheltenham Town.
Fleetwood came out on top beating their league opponents 3-2, a very important result for The Cod Army as it gave them their first three points of the season.
It was 22-year-old defender Darnell Johnson who impressed most as he made his debut for the side he joined this summer and topped it off by scoring Fleetwood’s second goal of the night, getting on the end of a corner to strike it in.
Speaking about his debut, Johnson told Fleetwood Weekly News: “I’m delighted to get my first goal and to make my debut for Fleetwood. It’s a great feeling and there is plenty more to come.
“The game was up and down, but with all the lads working hard and persevering we got what we deserved in the end.”
The youngster signed for Fleetwood at the start of August after he was released by Leicester City. He never made an appearance for Leicester but had short loan spells at Hibernian, Wigan Athletic and AFC Wimbledon, as well as featuring for England’s youth teams up from U16 up to U20.
Johnson admitted it was a strange summer which involved training alone as he waited to find a club. However, he feels happy about the way things have gone for him and is excited for his future at Fleetwood. He said: “I think it was the right time for me to come in and make my mark.
“I wanted to come here because of the whole club, the fanbase and how the club is run. When I first came here it was all very good – all the lads were welcoming and the manager was very clear with what he wanted.
“There was a clear atmosphere for me to progress in my career and I felt this was the right place for me.”
Johnson will be absolutely thrilled with his debut for his new club. A goal on your debut is impressive for any player, never mind a defender.
With Fleetwood picking up their first win of the season too, it is likely Darnell will be full of confidence alongside his teammates as they prepare for their next game away at Plymouth.
The defender will has made an impressive start to life at Fleetwood and will no doubt have earned himself a place in the starting XI on Saturday too. He will be hoping this is just the start of a good season for both himself and his team.
