Jamie Shackleton made another cameo appearance for Leeds United as they ground out yet another 1-0 win, this time coming away to Middlesbrough to restore their five-point lead in second place.

With back-to-back wins seeing Marcelo Bielsa’s men move clear of Fulham in second place as the sides below them drop points each week but Nottingham Forest’s win over Cardiff City on Tuesday night closed the gap to three points.

The Whites made the trip to the Riverside looking for a third straight win and were set on their way in first-half stoppage time when Mateusz Klich started and finished an attack with the game’s only goal.

It was a nervy finish to the game as Leeds looked to close out the match and failed to take their chances to put the game beyond all doubt, and with substitutes still remaining, Bielsa turned to midfielder Jamie Shackleton in place of Pablo Hernandez to help shore up the midfield.

His energy and exuberance in the middle of the pitch helped Leeds recover the ball on numerous occasions and gain priceless territory to run the clock down. It was just enough for the Whites to see off the Teessiders, even with Shackleton doing his best to gift Lewis Wing a great chance from a free-kick right on the edge of the box.

Shackleton’s return to the side in recent games was a huge boost as Adam Forshaw sits out for the season.

His impact on the side late on was noted by fans, who are eager to see the 20-year-old get more involvement in the coming weeks...
