Wigan Athletic sealed their return to the Championship after a year's absence with a dominant 4-0 victory over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

Despite their initial struggles to adapt to the third tier of English football, the goals of Will Grigg, the midfield prowess of Michael Jacobs and Max Power and some shrewd January signings has seen the club earn promotion with a game to spare.

Such has been their control of the league since the turn of the year, it would not be out of the question for Wigan to compete towards the top end of the Championship next year, given the resources that manager Gary Caldwell will surely have to work with.

A feat like this has been achieved before - Southampton between 2010-2012, Norwich between 2009-2011 and Manchester City between 1999-2001 - showing that a swift return to the Premier League for Wigan would not be out of the question.

Here are FIVE reasons why Wigan Athletic could secure back-to-back promotions:

1. Gary Caldwell

The Wigan hierarchy took a risk on Gary Caldwell at the end of the 2014/15 season, believing that his knowledge of the club would help the club rebuild following a disastrous second season in the Championship.

The move has certainly brought success to Wigan, with Caldwell achieving promotion in his first season in charge.

Caldwell has done a fantastic job in rebuilding the side - he brought in 15 players during the summer transfer window, before adding a further 6 in January.

Although Wigan possess by far the highest budget in the league, Caldwell has bought wisely and invested in proven League One talent, such as the £1m signing of Will Grigg - the league's leading goalscorer on 23 - and Sam Morsy, who was arguably Chesterfield's best player before making the move up north.

With more money to spend next season, Caldwell's handling of transfers will be crucial to any success the club have, but given his prowess in the market this season there must be confidence that he can deliver the same results.

2. Will Grigg

As mentioned previously, Wigan shelled out £1 million for Grigg last summer, with some fans questioning the size of the transfer fee.

However, Grigg's 23 goals have not only made him a cult hero amongst the Wigan fans, but they have also fired them to promotion and, surely, the League One title.

Grigg has proven quality in England's first tier, with similar goal returns seen at two of his previous League One clubs, Walsall and MK Dons.

Despite his prowess, Grigg has never been afforded a real opportunity in the Championship over a whole season, although manager Caldwell will surely back him to deliver the goods next season.

If Grigg can take his opportunity in the second tier and continue to score on a regular basis, he could be a key factor behind Wigan's push for further success.

3. The chairman

The Football League's youngest chairman at 24, David Sharpe, took over from his grandfather Dave Whelan midway through the 2014/15 season.

After Whelan stepped down amidst controversial circumstances relating to the appointment of Malky Mackay, and with Wigan facing the threat of relegation, no-one would have blamed Sharpe for turning the role down.

However, Sharpe quickly moved to appoint Gary Caldwell at the end of that season and has presided over Wigan's rampage to what looks like the League One title, after delivering on his promise that Wigan would 'bounce back' to the Championship.

With the rebuild having been completed with the financial support of chairman and owner, it will be interesting to see whether a united Wigan squad can push on next season in the Championship.

Sharpe has also never broken his leg in an FA Cup final, which could bode well for the future.

4. Championship experience

Despite the club's insistence in bringing in proven League 1 talent over the summer, Wigan's squad does possess experience of both the Championship and the Premier League.

Jussi Jaaskelainen, who joined Wigan on a free transfer last summer, has made over 400 appearances in the Premier League.

Craig Morgan, captain of the side, made 65 appearances in the Championship over a two year spell for Peterborough and Preston North End, with midfielder Chris McCann having made 275 appearances in the same division.

Jason Pearce, Leon Barnett, Stephen Warnock (currently on loan at the club) and Michael Jacobs are amongst the other Wigan players with Championship experience, with that same experience crucial to Wigan if they want to achieve promotion next season.

5. Squad unity

One of the main factors behind Wigan's success this season is the togetherness shown within their squad.

Many fans have commented that the unity of the players is amongst the best they have ever seen - which is remarkable for a team that has seen 21 players brought in since the end of last season.

Others have noted that the players have been able to identify with the fans far more than in previous seasons, when Wigan were struggling to stay up in both the Premier League and the Championship years.

One team in this year's Championship who have a united squad are Preston, with Simon Grayson's men achieving a top half finish.

Such unity, together with adequate signings, could see Wigan follow the same path and potentially push for the playoffs or automatic promotion.
