Portsmouth could be set for an interesting January transfer window, with Kenny Jackett's side challenging for promotion into the Championship.

Pompey are currently sat third in the League One table after 19 matches this term, and will be hoping they can put together a positive run of results at the earliest of opportunities.

Football League World's Portsmouth fan Nick Rogers gave us FIVE players that his side should target in the January transfer window.

After a stellar loan spell at Fratton Park last year, Seddon is target number one for both supporters and manager Kenny Jackett this January.

Left-back is a key position for the Blues to strengthen after Cameron Pring returned to parent club Bristol City, and while a loan approach to the Birmingham man is likely, a permanent transfer may be tricky but would be fantastic business.

Having already having featured 18 times for Pompey in 2020 and being back at the Brum after a loan at AFC Wimbledon in the first half of this campaign, the 23-year-old offers a new dimension on the left – forward thrust from deep, superb crossing from the wing and dead-ball prowess to make Pompey a real threat at set pieces.

Seddon’s impact was instantaneous during his previous stint at the club and he would be welcomed back with open arms.

Another option for that left-back spot, the Liverpool youngster Gallacher may be an option on loan as he seeks further first-team football after a spell in the MLS with Toronto FC in 2020.

The Scottish youth international is highly rated at Anfield – he made his Reds debut in a League Cup tie against Aston Villa and attracted interest from Barcelona as a teenager, before making the move across the pond.

The 21-year-old played 10 times in a successful spell in the Canada and now he is back in England, he will surely be open to a temporary move to the third tier to have more regular football. He would provide much needed depth in that left-back position.

Another look amongst the promising youngsters in the Liverpool academy brings up the intriguing prospect of Jake Cain. Kenny Jackett has been open with his desire to bring in another attacking midfielder to the squad, and 19-year-old Cain could be the perfect fit in this Blues squad.

He has been receiving multiple plaudits for dynamic and energetic displays for the Liverpool Under-23s this season, a left-footer who has grabbed three goals and two assists in eight league appearances, and could be a driving force in Pompey’s midfield if the Blues were able to secure a loan deal for the English prospect.

He has made his Liverpool debut and recently signed a long-term contract after being named by Jurgen Klopp in a press conference, showing the potential this kid has.

Pompey may be tempted to enter the free-agent market to strengthen their squad this January and Jackson Irvine represents one of the most tantalising possibilities at League One level.

The Australian international has been without a club since leaving Hull City in 2020, a surprise decision after the 27-year-old had made over 100 appearances in three years at the KCOM Stadium and had captained the Tigers in their relegation season last campaign.

The central midfielder would offer versatility and creativity in Pompey’s engine room, while he has the ability to get forward that Jackett is looking to add to the side – he hit a respectable 21 goals in five years of Championship football with Burton Albion and Hull. Fitness may be a concern and wages may be a sticking point, but there is no doubt that Irvine would improve the Blues.

Finally, we have an ex-Pompey loanee who seemed to have the world at his feet but finds himself without a club for over half a season after being released by Aston Villa last summer.

Green – a quick, tricky winger who can play across the forward line– was highly rated at Villa Park but a series of underwhelming loan spells (at Pompey, Preston North End and Charlton Athletic) mean that the 22-year-old former England youth international is currently a free agent.

He could be a transformative signing for Pompey, if he is able to show the flashes of brilliance that we saw in his previous stint at Fratton Park on a more regular basis. A young starlet with something to prove could be Kenny Jackett’s wildcard in Pompey’s promotion bid this campaign.
