With Tim Krul sidelined throughout December through injury, Northern Ireland international Michael McGovern proved a worthy understudy, defying some critical fans.

However, the 36-year-old is out of contract this summer and evidently a younger, stronger back-up keeper is required sooner rather than later. Portsmouth’s Craig MacGillivray could prove that player.

The Scot has provided the defensive foundation for a strong season in which the South Coast side have conceded just 15 goals in 19 league matches. Bigger and more commanding than McGovern, the 27-year-old Pompey number one would represent a genuine challenge to Krul, who is arguably lacking a back-up capable of sufficiently pushing him to his limit.

Additionally, this is a highly viable financial option given Portsmouth’s third tier status.

Reading have certainly been this Championship season’s surprise package, and their young left-back Omar Richards has contributed strongly to their sustained play-off push, making 21 appearances so far. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, with German giants Bayern Munich reportedly in talks to sign the 22-year-old, whose contract runs out this summer.

If an incredibly tempting move to the European Champions were to fall through however, Richards would represent a proven, quality solution to the Canaries’ left-back woes.

With Villareal loanee Xavi Quintilla still recovering from a hip injury, young midfielder Thomas Sorensen has filled in admirably since October. Regardless, the addition of a strong, naturally left-sided defender would be a huge positive in Norwich’s bid for an immediate Premier League return.

Former PSG Centre-back Cedric Kipré has struggled at West Brom since his move last summer, a signing former boss Slaven Bilic distanced himself from. His failure to break into the first team could prompt the French defender to seek a move and given Norwich City’s continued lack of depth in Central defence, he could be a great January option.

Despite his troubles in the West Midlands, Kipré remains a proven Championship defender. Throughout his 36 league appearances for Wigan last season, he consistently demonstrated his impressive tackling ability and strong physical presence, contributing to a defence which kept 15 clean sheets and were only relegated due to a 12-point deduction.

While Gibson and Hanley have impressed as a balanced defensive duo this season, given City’s continued injury concerns, investing in reinforcements would be wise.

City will be required to adapt during this transfer market, as player recruitment from Europe has been complicated by new Brexit rules.

Potential signings from European clubs must now be granted a GBE (Governing Body Endorsement) by passing a points-based system revolving around international caps, club appearances and the quality of the selling club.

Young Croatian playmaker Lovro Majer’s position as a key creative force within Dinamo Zagreb’s ranks means he would certainly make the cut, and if City are unlucky enough to lose Emi Buendia this window, Majer could be an effective replacement.

Forward-thinking and technically gifted, the 22-year-old midfielder has notched three goals and four assists in his 12 league appearances for the club this season, and he would certainly bolster an already strong creative line-up at Norwich. Considering his age, international experience and evident quality, he may however slightly stretch City’s limited funds.

With Arsenal’s unashamed pursuit of midfield magician Emi Buendia increasingly hotting up, some sources have begun to suggest that Mikel Arteta could be lining up a player plus cash bid for the Argentine playmaker involving an Arsenal youngster such as Joe Willock or Reiss Nelson.

Plenty of Norwich fans are desperate to hold onto Buendia, and while we sit top of the league with the 24-year-old contracted until 2024, there is no reason to sell. However, if such a deal was struck, Nelson would be a high-quality addition capable of causing havoc across Championship defences.

The 21-year-old winger demonstrated his clear talent on loan at Hoffenheim, scoring seven times in 29 appearances, and he commands genuine respect amongst Arsenal fans. Quick, tricky and capable of producing an excellent final product, the England youth international certainly possesses the talent to help bring the Championship title to Carrow Road.
